Blame is a bay homebred colt owned by Claiborne Farm in association with Adele B. Dilschneider. He was sired by Claiborne's Arch out of the Seeking the Gold mare (and 2010 Kentucky Broodmare of the Year) Liable. He was trained during his racing career by Al Stall Jr., and partnered with veteran jockey Garrett Gomez during his 2010 championship season. After being retired at the end of 2010, he was sent to stud at Claiborne Farm, where he stands for a stud fee of $35, 000

Race Record

Blame started racing as a 2 year old, running 3rd in a maiden special weight in his debut. In his next start, Blame went on to win a maiden special weight on October 17th, 2008 at Keeneland Race Track going 7 furlongs.

After breaking his maiden, Blame finished third in an allowance , which he followed with a win in an allowance race on July 2nd, 2009 at Churchill Downs.

Blame made his stakes debut a winning one in the Curlin Stakes at Belmont Park Race Track.

Blame then started in the Grade II Super Derby, finishing second behind Regal Ransom who stole the race on an easy and uncontested lead.

He then notched his first graded stakes win in the 1 1/8 mile, Grade II Fayette Stakes at Keeneland and ended his 2009 racing year with another win in the Grade II Clark Handicap, in which he defeated multiple Grade I winner Einstein.

Blame made his 2010 racing debut a winning one, when he captured the 1 1/16 miles, Grade III William Donald Schaefer Handicap at Pimlico Race Track on Preakness Stakes day.

On June 12th, 2010 Blame impressed in the Stephen Foster Handicap, wearing down favored Battle Plan in the final strides to win by 3/4 of a length and count his first Grade I win. Following the Stephen Foster, Blame was pointed to the Whitney Handicap for an anticipated showdown with brilliant Metropolitan Handicap and Donn Handicap winner Quality Road. On August 7th, 2010 Blame posted a mild upset over favored Quality Road in defeating him by a head.

Blame's next race was the Jockey Club Gold Cup, Blame chased Haynesfield who set a moderate and uncontested pace. Like Blame's race in the 2009 Super Derby, he could not catch the winner and ran 2nd, beaten 4 lengths.

In the Breeders' Cup Classic held in 2010 at Churchill Downs, Blame became the only horse to ever finish ahead of champion and fan favorite Zenyatta, holding off the previously 19-0 mare by a head in a game and determined performance. [1] For his strong season he was named Champion Older Male for 2010 in the Eclipse Award voting, and finished a close second to super-mare Zenyatta in the Eclipse voting for Horse of the Year.
